a note to my beautiful daughter on her second birthday

Dear Janers,

I have loved having you for two years.  You are an amazing little person and I am so happy that I am your mom.  I glad that you are my first born so that I could enjoy having just you for almost 2 years.  I love when your brother takes long naps in his crib so that we can be a twosome again!  I've listed some of the things that I want to remember about you at age 2:

You know what you want and you're so stubborn.  You are a fantastic negotiator.  When your request is denied, you often ask for just one or just a "little".  If that fails, you tell me you're going to do it when you're bigger.  Baby girl, you have a long list of things you're going to do when you're bigger (including scaling the sides of the bathtub and putting nuts where the sun don't shine).  You flash us this look frequently.

You are a little dare devil and scare us daily with your crazy stunts.  You tell me several times per day that you'd like to take a ride in a car with a red light (i.e., an ambulance, line taken from Madeline, one of your favorite books) but I really hope that you never need to.

We call you the monk-aroo because you like to climb (like a monkey) and jump (like a kangaroo)...on everything..even things you're not supposed to.

I was so nervous about how you'd react to Solly.  But you loved him from the very first time you saw him.  I love that you show him all of your toys and books and bring him whatever he needs.  I love that you always want him around!  A few days ago, Solly took a long nap.  You and I had a great time--doing art, reading books, making a mess...but when he woke up you bolted down the hall to his room with your little finger pointed and ready to touch him while saying "little, little" on repeat.  You couldn't wait to see him again!  This is my all time favorite photo of the two of you (Solly is just a few days old)!

You love to hear stories about things we've done or things we're going to do.  You ask to hear the stories again and again and again.  The repetition drives us crazy! (photo: signing book, which is how you ask for a story)

I am so happy that reading is one of your all time favorite activities!!  Your comprehension amazes us!  Your favorite books/series are Madeline. Olivia, Little Critter, Fancy Nancy, Carl dog, Mo Willems' pigeon, Clifford, and Curious George.

You love to draw and act out scenes from your books.
putting stuff in a tree (from the book, Stuck

You are a creative little artist!  You are much more into the process rather than the product.  Lately you started copying my simple sketches and you are really quite good!

You love sensory activities.
playing with soapy water
playing with rice

You like to play and explore outside.
drawing with chalk in the rain (a true Seattle girl!)

You are so resistant to talking and have very few words.  We were thrilled when you started telling us "no" (as opposed to shaking your head) a few weeks ago.  This coming year, my top hope for you is that you start talking.  I know that you have so much to say!

When you turned 1 year, I wrote down words that describe you:  hesitant, curious, determined, opinionated  sweet, funny.  Now that you're a year older and can express yourself better, I think I would add clever and independent to the list as well. But baby girl, you are who you've always been because at age two those words still describe you!

I cannot wait to see what adventures our third year with you brings our way!

Love,
Maaaaa
